Selecting the seismic technology, survey type and acquisition parameters to characterize your reservoir requires a multi-million-dollar decision. There are an infinite number of combinations of acquisition styles and parameters, resulting in survey costs that vary by more than an order of magnitude. For example, an exploration multi-client 3D can cost less than $5,000/km2, while a development OBN survey have traditionally cost in the order $100,000/km2 (although that cost is trending down).

In between these two technologies is a plethora of options, including MAZ, WAZ, TopSeis, PentaSource, Coil, 3D DAS VSP, GeoStreamer, NOAR and Sercel MS. Most seismic contractors specialise on one type of acquisition (either towed streamer or OBN) and have “proprietary” techniques that they insist will be the most-effective solution (e.g. GeoStreamer, Penta-source, TopSeis, Coil, Sparse OBN, 3D DAS VSP). In contrast, PHASE GEO offers impartial advice, free of contractor bias.
