Downhole

3D VSP’s are now a viable alternative to conventional surface seismic imaging.

The advent of Fiber Optic sensing enables the recording of 1000’s of channels of data simultaneously at sample intervals below 10m, from surface to TD. Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is now providing raw seismic data quality on par with traditional downhole geophones.

  • 2D DAS VSP’s derive parameters to optimize conventional surface seismic imaging (e.g. shallow velocity profile, anisotropy, interval velocity field, Q).
  • 3D DAS VSP’s image complex sub-salt reservoirs at a fraction of the cost of OBN.
  • 4D DAS VSP’s have successfully monitored fluid movement

FO cable can be deployed temporarily or installed permanently. Most Fiber Optic cable is multi-purpose, allowing for check shot or VSP data to be acquired using FO cable installed for in-well temperature or acoustic monitoring.

Advances in DAS technology, equipment and deployment continue at a rapid pace, along with alternative FO technologies, such as Fiber-Bragg Grating (FBG).
